Submersible Sump Pumps

Sump Pump Installation

Sump Pump Installation- A Step By Step Guide

A proper installation of a submersible sump pump is important to ensure that the water collected in your basement sump pit is regularly channeled out that does not cause any damage to your basement area. For sump pump installation, one can seek the service of a professional. However, if you are looking to keep the installation cost to a minimum that is not a complete stranger to plumbing jobs, you may as well go the DIY route and install a sump pump yourself. Here is how to go about the job:

The first thing to do is to determine location of the utility, sewer and waterlines and to ensure that the location of the sump pit is at least 20 cms away from any of these lines. Once you have chosen the location, you will have to drill a hole to place the liner in. The hole must be at least 6 inches deeper and 3 inches wider than the liner. You can use heavy-duty jackhammer to cut through the concrete. One can also use rotary hammer to get the job done more quickly.

Once the hole has been dug, the bottom of the hole must be leveled with 6 inches of coarse gravel to create a firm pedestal. Then put the liner into the pit and fill the outside place with coarse gravel, too. Next, the discharge pipe needs to be attached to the sump pump, which should then be placed into the liner basin. For the outlet pipe, it is best to use a PVC drainage pipe. Cut a PVC pipe 1 foot long and with a diameter of 3.5 to 5 centimeter. To run it through a rim-joist, cut a hole into the joist and fit the PVC pipe into the hole. Installing the outlet pipe with care is necessary.

Next, pieces of PVC pipe needs to be cut into measured lengths. These pieces will pass through the rim header on their way to the inside of the pipe from the pump. Make sure that the pieces are all dry fitted. Once you are sure everything is in place, cement the pipes together. Fit the other discharge pipes from the pump according to the manufacturer's directions. Once the pipes are properly fitted, adjust the pump’s float valve following the directions. Plug in the pump and check the operation.

Once you complete the sump pump installation following these instructions, you will also have to make sure that your sump pump systems are subjected to regular maintenance. This will ensure your system is effectively and will keep your basement area clean around the year.
