One might need submersible sump pumps for a variety of reasons, but the one chosen inevitably depends on the job. Price and manufacturer do matter, but they are secondary. Systems do differ, so please read packaging carefully. Installation is the same manufacturer to manufacturer, and is simple. Gone are the days of accidentally getting a mouthful of stagnate water while siphoning out a hole; these little marvels quietly and effortlessly remove unwanted water.
The most common use of submersible sump pumps is to pump extra water from a home basement sump pit. However, submersible pumps can be used anywhere there is flooding, pool construction or even pool maintenance, periodic underground soil saturation and a water table issue. Standing water of, at least, the pump's intake valve depth is necessary.
Costs vary, as well as the best submersible pumps, as the applications demand differences. However, the essential characteristic of how many gallons per minute or gallons per hour (GPM OR GPH, respectively) of water are evacuated does determine pricing. The higher the rate of removal, the higher the price is. Submersible sump pumps are measured by horsepower. The larger motor does affect the pump's efficiency and the vertical depth, which is called the "lift" or "head", at which a pump can spit up water. Primarily though, it is the GPM or GPH that is the critical feature. Notice whether the GPM or GPH lessens with a higher head height. Also, it is often desirable to have systems that will pass small solids, like twigs and leaves. Lastly, power cord lengths vary and extension cords should never be used.
Fortunately, even novices can install submersible sump pumps. Firstly, clear out any debris that your system can not handle. Using joint compound, attach, as short as possible and as straight as possible, a pipe length to the pump's discharge valve. Attach a closed off joint to the discharge pipe, just above the waste water, for relief and repair. Using electrical tape, bind the discharge pipe and power cords to the pump, so that they are secure and out of the way. Place pump in the deepest level location possible and turn on.
Submersible sump pumps are quieter and safer for children than pedestal types. Be sure to purchase a non-corrosive pump. Sheet metal is not appropriate for your home, your basement or any application for submersible pumps.
